Friday & Saturday, August 3-4, 2007 - Glacier National Park to Idaho
I broke camp to continue my journey to the west side of the park. It turned out to be a beautiful day. The winds had come up a little and cleared the air. Probably not good for the fires, but great for my photo ops. The name of the 50 mile east-west highway across the park is named “Going-to-the Sun Road." I rate this drive right up there with the road from Durango to Silverton. Breathtaking. I was able to do more hiking as the day was very cool and I was able to leave Belle in the car. There's one area on this drive that is called the Triple Divide Peak. The interesting thing about it is that at this geographical point, the water flows to three different areas, rather than two at the Continental Divide. The water flows to the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Hudson Bay. I took many pictures of Jackson Glacier, which is the only glacier in the park that can be viewed from the road. All the others have to be hiked to. At Logan Pass, there were mountain goats galore. The last hike I did for the day was Trail of the Cedars. Huge tall cedars. So beautiful and serene. I then hiked a couple of miles in to Avalanche Lake. Looking across the lake, there were waterfalls cascading down the mountain. From afar, the falls didn't seem intense, but you could hear them roaring down the side of the mountain. I have no idea how big they were but they sounded enormous. I then headed out of Montana into Idaho. I spent the night with Aimee's mom, Carla, right outside of North Fork, Idaho. She has a beautiful place on 80 acres right on Panther Creek, which flows into the Salmon River. In the morning, Carla cooked breakfast for me, her son, Clay and his partner Don. I then went on a tour of her wonderful orchard and gardens. We then picked apples and pears. At one point I saw Clay getting into a tractor of some short (I'm not sure what's it's called, I guess it's a backhoe). I shouted with glee that I wanted to drive it – I always had a fantasy of being a heavy equipment operator. Low and behold, I was given a driving lesson. It was so fun. I took pictures which I hope to get posted soon. Carla then took me on a 4-wheeler and gave me a tour of her property. Absolutely beautiful.
